Social Bookmarking is an important way to draw traffic to your website. It is also a good way to keep track of all the wonderful websites you encounter. When you link to one of your favorite useful sites on the web, you are in effect giving that site a “kudo,” “point” or “vote.” This vote translates to Google that the info on the site is valuable. So, the more votes you get, the better your website or blog’s traffic will be and the more valuable the site will become. Your website will also gain higher rankings when it is noted on various social bookmarking sites by more than one person.

Social bookmarking is basically a way to organize web content. You tag content of any web page, web site, blog or profile page using keywords you deem relevant for future reference. While there is no standard list of keywords to use when social bookmarking, it is helpful for communicating with search engine spiders. It’s also good to see how many others found the same web document interesting.

Social bookmarking is a good tool for search engine optimization because, “the more often a web page is submitted and tagged, the better chance it has of being found.” (Wiki) Beware, however, of overdoing bookmarks to a single site. The bookmarking sites are monitored to penalize and potentially ban those websites that engage in spam tactics. Don’t cheat, don’t overdo it and have fun!
